Life span: 11 to 14 years.

General characteristics/temperament: Beagles are gentle, happy-go-lucky and friendly, making them very popular as family pets. Since they lived and hunted in packs for hundreds of years, they naturally enjoy the company of other dogs and humans. They have one of the best developed senses of smell of any dog and are easily distracted by scents around them. They are active and require regular exercise to stay fit since they are prone to obesity. Although they are eager to please and respond well to treat-based training methods, they generally do not do well in obedience trials because they are too easily distracted or bored.
