Original purpose: Used by mariners aboard ships to hunt vermin.

Height: 11 to 13 inches

Life span: 10 to 15 years.
General characteristics/temperament: The Chinese Crested is elegant, gay, alert, lively, and agile. It comes in two varieties: the hairless and the powerpuff. Both varieties will frequently appear in the same litter. The hairless variety is prone to skin irritations, allergies and sunburn, and precautions must be taken to prevent this. They are loving and playful companions and do well in families with gentle children.

Suitable canine sports/activities: conformation, agility, obedience
Grooming requirement: Brush frequently to prevent matting. Shed very little.
Known health problems: Poor dentition (mostly in the hairless variety), progressive retinal atrophy, canine multiple system degeneration, patellar luxation, allergies, autoimmune diseases.
