Color: Solid colors and sable. A solid color dog may have shading, primarily darker, down the back and on the ears.
Life span: 7 to 10 years.
General characteristics/temperament: The Chinese Shar-Pei is regal, alert, intelligent, dignified, lordly, scowling, sober and snobbish . They are independent and somewhat standoffish with strangers, but extremely devoted to their family. Originally a multipurpose farm dog, they have retained many of the skills required of them, including vermin catching, guarding, herding, and tracking skills. They are quick learners, but are often stubborn and require early and consistent training and socialization. Because they tend to be territorial and very protective, inadequate socialization and/or training can lead to excessive aggressiveness.
