Color: Solid black or solid liver.
Life span: 8 to 10 years.
General characteristics/temperament: The Flat-Coated Retriever is friendly, outgoing, confident, sensible, bright, and tractable. They are versatile hunting retrievers working both on land and in water. Cheerful and affectionate, they make devoted family companions. They are generally great with children, although they might knock over small children due to their exuberant, playful nature. Many are said to retain puppy-like playfulness well into old age. They have a strong desire to please, but are easily bored with repetitive training techniques and can be strong-willed at times, so might be slightly more difficult to train than the more popular breeds, Labrador and Golden Retrievers. They are highly adaptable to changing circumstrances both as working dogs and as family pets. As adults, they will generally give warning barks when visitors come to the door, but because of their tendency to be friendly to strangers, they do not make good guardians.
