Color: Rich, lustrous golden of various shades.

Life span: 10 to 12 years.

General characteristics/temperament: The Golden Retriever is intelligent, friendly, active, alert, self-confident, reliable, and trustworthy. They are eager to please, and are adaptable to many different living situations. They are typically friendly even with strangers, and are patient with children. They are athletic and energetic and do require daily exercise and/or involvement with a competitive canine sport. In addition, they are excellent swimmers and generally love water. They are one of the most popular breeds, and make excellent family pets, hunting companions, as well as guide dogs and search and rescue dogs.

Exercise requirement: Daily walks or other forms of exercise, including swimming.

Grooming requirement: The water-repellant double-coat sheds seasonally. Brush weekly, and trim the hair between pads of the feet and around the ears once a month.

Known health problems: Hip dysplasia, elbow dysplasia, cancer, gastric dilatation volvulus, cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, glaucoma, sub-aortic stenosis, cardiomyopathy, allergies, joint diseases.
