Gordon Setter
Breed origin: Scotland
Original purpose: Bird dog.
AKC recognized: 1878
AKC group: Sporting
Size:
Weight: males 55 to 80 lbs;
females 45 to 70 lbs
Size: Height: males 24 to 27 inches;
females 23 to 26 inches
Color: Black with tan markings, either of rich chestnut or mahogany color.
Life span: 10 to 12 years.
General characteristics/temperament: The Gordon Setter is intelligent, alert, gay, interested, fearless, affectionate, loyal, and confident. They make good family dogs and are generally patient with children, although puppies and even adult dogs might be too boisterous for very young children. They have great stamina and require a lot of exercise, both physical and mental. They must not be allowed to roam because their strong hunting instinct will lead them into trouble. They are said to be slow to mature, taking about three years to do so, and even after that they will retain many puppy-like characteristics well into adulthood.
