Original purpose: From pampered lap-dog of the aristocracy, to family companion, watchdog, child’s playmate and herder of the family’s poultry flock.

General characteristics/temperament: The Havanese is the National Dog of Cuba, and is playful, alert, sturdy, intelligent, charming, friendly, gentle, responsive, and affectionate. They are highly trainable and their temperament make them an ideal family pet.

Exercise requirement: They do require daily exercise, but because of their small size, their exercise requirement can usually be met by playing in a fenced yard or running around indoors.
Grooming requirement: This is considered a minimal-shedding breed, but needs to be brushed daily to prevent mats.
Known health problems: Liver disease, heart disease, cataracts, retinal dysplasia.
