General characteristics/temperament: The Kai Ken is highly intelligent, sturdy, athletic, alert, courageous, and dignified. They are extremely devoted to their family and will lay down their own lives to protect them. They do best as inside dogs and require a lot of love and attention from their family. They are fast learners and respond best to positive training methods. They are reserved with strangers and like to perch on high places in order to keep an eye on things. They generally love kids and do very well with them. They are natural hunters and must be kept on a leash or in a securely fenced area when outside.
