Also known as: Canary Dog of Prey, Presa Canario, Dogo Canario
Breed origin: Uncertain, possibly Canary Islands
Original purpose: Guarding farms, struggling with cattle and extermination of wild or stray dogs.

Color: All shades of fawn or brindle, with a black mask.
Life span: 8 to 12 years.
General characteristics/temperament: The Perro de Presa Canario is powerful, agile, courageous, loyal, and protective. They are wary of strangers but extremely affectionate and docile with their family. They tend to be dominant and may be aggressive with other dogs. Early socialization and obedience training are a must with this breed. Because of their size and strength, they must also be socialized with children under proper supervision starting in early puppyhood. The Presa loves water and is an excellent swimmer.
