General characteristics/temperament: The Portuguese Podengo is agile, elegant, hardy, intelligent, lively, fearless, and loyal. They have exceptional senses of sight, hearing, and smell. They are easy to train, and excel in many canine sports. They make excellent watchdogs and companions. They are very agile, and are very good jumpers and climbers. Most of them like to dig also, so fences must be high enough to prevent jumping and secured at the bottom to prevent digging out of the fence.
