Life span: 10 to 20 years.
General characteristics/temperament: The Shih Tzu is outgoing, happy, affectionate, and friendly. They were bred to be companion dogs, and are trusting towards all. However, they are not afraid to stand up for themselves. They do not tolerate the heat because of their short noses, and must be kept cool in hot climates.

Energy/Activity Level: Low
Good jogging partner? No
Grooming requirement: Brush thoroughly at least once a week. Some dogs with softer coats mat more easily and may require daily brushing. Bathe every three to four weeks. Some owners opt to keep their dogs in a short "puppy clip" to make it easier to maintain.
Known health problems: Heat stroke, portosystemic shunts, hip dysplasia.
